I think it does Fred. When a neighbour taps on the icons in your village, that 'gift' goes directly into your warehouse if there's room. If there isn't room, it looks like it goes into your inventory - the backpack at the bottom of the screen. On one island I found food in my inventory because my warehouse was already full and on another island coral went directly into my warehouse because it wasn't full. But it doesn't look like there's anyway of telling who visited and left gifts unlike AC. At least, to me, this is how it seems to work.
