Trouble deleting history on ipad 2

The instructions are not working. Settings, Safari, Delete History Cache Cookies. Go back to Safari and the back tab will bring me to the sites I am trying to delete.

If you want to delete the backtab then press the icon in Safari that has the little number on it - showing the number of 'open' web pages. Now press the top left hand corner of the icon of the pages whose history you're trying to erase. It will close that page and erase the history. However, also go to your Bookmarks icon and erase history there...
