Troubles updating iOS on Ipad

So I got boon doggled into buying an Ipad 1 when I really thought I was buying an Ipad 2 over the previous holiday season. I've been trying to update the iOS to the current version, or any version besides the pre-installed version, but it keep erroring out. I have a PC and have the latest iTunes version installed so I'm not sure what the issue is. It keeps erroring out during the installation process I believe and not during the download version. I would appreciate any help somebody can give or even give a link to a solution.

By newest version, I assume you mean iOS 5.0.1? That's the latest version...

What are the error codes you are getting? There are so many, we need to know which ones you are seeing. Also, what iOS version are you on currently?
