unable to delete old Apple ID. keeps popping up and asking for password, which I do not have anymore

If the Apple ID hasn't been changed and still exists, this might help:

This site will help you resetting your password. All you have to do, is enter the email address (your Apple ID), and answer security questions, or use email authentication.
After resetting the password, you can enter it in the popup.
