I have been looking at different tablets. There are lots of options, but I keep coming back to the Ipad. My question is should I get the Ipad or the Ipad2? I don't think I will use the camera, so that isn't a big deal. Also, when there is an update to the software it is the same for both the ipad and ipad2 correct? So, is there much of a difference between the two and is the ipad2 much faster than the first version? Thanks.

I was in the exact position as you about a month ago and decided to go with a refurb iPad 1 from apple. I wasn't to sure how much I was going to use it so in order to save a few bucks I went this route. The 2 is quicker, thinner and lighter with a camera.

So far I'm more than happy and saved a few bucks on top of it.

Is that smart cover important to you? If so, you are limited to the version 2. Consider, too, that the "camera" can be used with video chat functions. Make sure that this is not important to you.

When I decided to get an extra iPad (already had iPad 1), I decided to get an iPad 2. I figured firmware upgrades might go longer with iPad 2 than 1.

I did get my husband an iPad 1 at clearance price ($200 off), though. What he uses it for is so basic, firmware upgrades won't matter.

iPad 2 is faster, though iPad 1 is no slouch.

If you resell gadgets when you upgrade, you'll get more for a later model, I'm guessing. I don't resell, but I'd consider that if I did.

At this point I'd suggest the ipad 2.
While the first generation is fine and can be bought for less money, the developers are starting to take advantage of the increased RAM and speed of the 2. On older apps you probably would never notice a difference between the 2 devices.
If you just plan on checking email and some light web browsing the first generation is a steal at the price.
I have a Galaxy Tab with a camera and rarely use the camera.

Unless you are under immediate money constraints it is almost always better to buy the more up to date model. If for no other reason, it will remain compatible with new software longer.

The way things have been working with the iPhone, the iPad 2 should be upgradable to the latest iOS version for at least one year past the iPad 1. That means at least one year more of use before you'll be forced to buy a newer model to get the latest updates.

It's not all that different from computers. You buy cheap when you have to. When you can afford it you buy a good current model, because in the long run that is the cheaper option. It lasts longer, runs up to date software longer, and you live longer due to the reduced stress. Well, maybe not the last.
