What's the deal with 5pm?

Dream

So this is the first time I plan to purchase an Apple product on launch day, and noticed they are not selling iPad 2's until 5pm on Friday, what is the deal with that???? Do they want people lined up all over the place to get these?

I am hoping the website does not crash from everybody trying to place an order. Apple should have started orders a week ago to prevent any server failures at launch.

Sent from my iPad using iPF

Yeah, it's totally to get lines and media coverage.

I've got a 3:30 meeting so I can't line up (could get their around 5:30 at the earliest probably. Debating on whether to order online Thurs. night or to swing buy after my meeting and seeing if they have any left. They had plenty left after the lines for the iPad 1 launch last year.

Its to Get media coverage, more free advertisements. Apple is slick as a mofo n smart at the same time.
The guy camping out is crazzzy. I would guess he has a job. Doing what, i dont know. Ipad2 isnt free so he definitely has the money to purchase it unless using credit card..lol. Or he mighta been saving up all year doing odds n ends work for people to fund his camping out. He betta stash it away fast once he buys it cuz someone might be liable to snatch it from him since he getting so much attn. From this. I hope that diesnt happen but if u remember last year, the lady who bought her ipad from walmart or something got it snatched as soon as she came out the store!

I didn't know you could order it Wed. I won't get off work until 6:00 PM and, am worried there will be none left. If they had plenty left - last year - that sounds encouraging and, I hope it's that way this year.

Online sales start at 12:01am PST Thursday night, not Wednesday. Sorry for the typo/brain fart.

That's cool. I'm on the east coast so, at least I know I'll be able to order it Friday morning before work, if I don't want to deal with the crowds.

Yeah, I'm on the east coast too. If I decide to order online I'll probably set an alarm and get up and order at 3:01 so I can be sure to get one of the first shipments.

Still debating on just swinging buy after work though. I figure even if there out of the model I want I'd probably get it quicker putting my name on the store wait list than ordering online and waiting for shipping.

I could technically go and line up. I work flexible hours being a college professor, but we have a departmental event at 3:30 (guest speaker) that I'd like to attend.

You'd still be getting a massive surge of enthusiastic customers whenever they decided to launch it. And you'd think that Apple would have sufficient experience to prepare for such events.

I don't think it's going to be as easy as "swinging by" at 6pm on launch day to get an iPad 2.

Remember, when the original iPad was released, it wasn't a huge hit yet - hell, we weren't even sure the category would take off at all. Even then, it took me quite some time (weeks) to find one at a local store.
