Absolutely. David Lynch's vision doesn't get enough credit. He captured the look and feel of the story. In fact, Frank Herbert was pleased with it, as well. Admittedly, the film went through hell and discombobulation to get produced, and it shows (I.e., the "Weirding Way" was NOT destructive weapons based on sound, but rather a unique state of awareness and rapid movement, as roughly depicted in the "Children of Dune" mini-series, etc.). However, in his defense, it's impossible to tell the whole Dune story in just one movie, considering the storyline spans millennia and the fact that it covers VERY complex structures of social-political situations. I've read every single book Frank and Brian/Kevin wrote for the Duniverse and I love it all. The 1984 film does, for the most part, tell the story (of the first book, anyway) in a nutshell and that should suffice. Rather than the remake some folks are currently formulating, they should move forward with an installation that portrays "God Emperor of Dune" and "Heretics of Dune", followed by that of "Chapterhouse: Dune", my favorite book of the whole batch.
