I agree that asking where im from is too general of a question. People usually mean to ask: where were you born, what is your ethnic background, or where do you consider home?

I consider where im "from" to be the place where i "hang my hat". Its the place where ive spent most of my life, childhood to adult, where my family still lives and works, and where i go back to visit and for vacation. im from san diego.
