Why is it necessary to have a credit card to register in iTunes?

I m facing a great difficulty while downloading apps because each time it asks me to register in iTunes, I do have a debit card but it does not accept it. Is there any solution? Dev

You could always buy an itunes gift card to buy apps with,i do as i think its safer than putting card details in anyway.

I use iTunes cards also, much safer this way.
