Wifi Drops Connection When Idle

The WiFi I use at my place of work drops your connection if idle for 5 minutes. Is there a setting (or an app) that can ping the network to overcome this?

Thanks.

This problem usually has to be solved on the router end. It's has to do with renewing the iPad's DHCP lease. And yes, the iPad can have problems with routers even though every other device known to man works. It's a long standing bug/problem with the iPad. Who knows, maybe iOS 5 will fix it, though we were wishing for iOS 4 to fix it before.

There are a couple things you can try with the iPad that may help.

Make sure you are running the most current iOS 4.3.3. Despite what I said about it not being fixed, it does seem somewhat better with the new iOS than it did with 3.2 and the first 4.3.1 updates.

Try resetting your network setting on the iPad. Go to Settings > General > Reset, and Reset Network Settings. You'll have to rejoin all your networks again.

See if you can talk the work IT guy into resetting the router (turn it off, wait a minute or two, and turn it back on again. If the guy is receptive you might ask if the router's firmware is up to date.

Without access to the Wi-Fi router's settings, this is about all you can do. Even then, in some cases people have found it necessary to buy a newer router.

I assumed from the OP's post that it was a setting in the router to kill idle connections. If that is the case it's a management decision so it's unlikely that they will reverse it just for one user.
The OP could of course open an app that streams data constantly (NASA TV maybe) to stop the iPad going into sleep mode.

Sometimes I have trouble with the router in my house signal just dies when using the mac and it's bad with iPod touch even going to the kitchen iPhone can lose signal. Should my broadband provider be able to fix this ?? I do turn it off and on again but it's a pain if your doing something and have to stop and start.

My old iPad does this a lot! The only device that does What do I change on my router twerppoet? I have a sky netgear router.

Thanks

Yes, indeed, this is the case. It's a large organization, with a very insular IT department. My problem is not with the device dropping connections. It's with the IT folks who have set their router so it knocks you off if you take a little time to answer a phone call or go to the bathroom! I think the NASA TV seems a great idea but I will have to kill the audio, which will affect other apps that use audio.

Can you put a static address in your Ipad, thus eliminating the lease request?
If you are allowed to do that the next time the Ipad is active go into the wifi settings , write down the IP info and copy it into static IP address .
Anybody with more knowledge please correct if I'm wrong there .
