You're going to have to try it to see. If you don't want to take a chance, buy the Apple Branded adapter.

It does both. If you just plug it in, then the first thing you see is your iPad screen on your tv, in 4:3 format (black bars on either side of the image). But if you play a video, or say play Netflix, then you get the video taking over the entire screen in 16:9 format.

You can also get an Apple TV or some other Air Play device...then you can stream your iPad to your TV over wifi...both mirroring and playing videos. Note that some apps won't allow certain types of playback. HBOGo recently changed their policy to allow streaming over Airplay, iirc.
