With Retina Display, iPad Mini’s production cost could be raised by 30%

With the first iPad mini up and running on the tech market, rumors of a second generation shrunken tablet have already surfaced on the World Wide Web. This week, the DigiTimes publication posted some information obtained from relevant sources which seem to indicate that Apple is most likely planning to bring the Retina Display to the iPad mini. All would be fine and peachy, except that such an addition would raise the manufacturing costs of the Mini with over 30%.

The current model available on the market boasts a s​​creen of 7.9-inch that features a 1,024x768 resolution. But in order to compete with other Android tablets, Apple will indeed have to make the update. At least in the long run.

One of the main reasons for which Apple opted to go for a lower resolution was compatibility, app-wise. The previous generation iPads all feature the same capabilities in the display department, so the older apps could as well be run on the iPad mini.

Another reason might have been pricing. With a Retina Display, we’re pretty sure the iPad mini is going to become more expensive. Also, in order to function, the Retina Display needs other components like those supposed to increase the brightness of the backlight and the GPU performance. All these upgrades will surely bring their toll on the prince range.

Currently the iPad mini costs in shops about $329, even if it takes only $188 to make one, according to IHS iSuppli.

I don't get why these things cost apple so much to make? They have the cheapest labor possible and should have access to the best prices on parts and stuff. Either way, the mini should have had a retina display when it came out. Period. It's good that will but if they price it too high that might hurt it. $349 might work but anything close to or over $400 gets iffy.
