What's new

Anybody else wondering why they made the changes they did to the ipod app in ios5

It might be my imagination but the Music App seems a little more responsive now...particularly Playlists...which were like molasses in January (Northern Hemisphere reference :)). It's not lightning fast or even on par with the old iPod App, but it does seem to be a little snappier.

I haven't found any new or restored features though. :(

But is the swipe the cover art to next song, gestures or new? I'm not sure as I've never had gestures!

You know...that's a good question because I don't think I ever tried it! It's certainly nice though.

I don't think I mentioned it, but one of the Music App settings I changed was "Group by Album Artist". IIRC it's set to "On" by default. I turned it to "Off". That may or may not have had an effect on the app's performance but so far so good. Settings > Music > Group By Album Artist.

Nope. I don't have it like that and it is a lot faster. I'm almost positive it's quickened up the music app. Sharper and snappier. You've got that right.

iTunes Match

As an aside I was also able to turn iTunes Match to "On" (Settings > Music > iTunes Match). Prior to this any time I tried it an error message would pop up saying that I hadn't subscribed to iTunes Match and to go to iTunes to set it. When I flipped the switch to "On" this time a pop-up asking for my Apple ID password appeared. I pasted it in and the switch went to "On" and a new option appeared underneath, "Show All Music":

After doing so the same subscription error popped up again though.

There's still no option in iTunes to turn the iTunes Match service on, but it looks like they're one step closer. Apple missed their "end of October" target activation however there are numerous stories about additional testing going on so I suspect we'll see it sooner than later now.

No. I don't have that rich. Are you a beta developer?

I have an Apple Developer License but I work primarily on OS X, not iOS...just never found the need to create anything for mobile devices. You have the iTunes Match line in your Music settings, but the second line, "Show All Music", won't appear until iTunes Match is turned on.

Nope. I really really don't. I've looked! My music starts off with sound check at the top. Nothing else!

Really? If you open your Settings App and tap on "Music" in the left-hand menu you should see iTunes Match at the very top. That was added with iOS 5 to everyone's iDevice. This is a before and after from the iPhone (since I already activated it on my iPad)...

I thought it was only added in the good old US of A?

Nope. Mine still looks like the first one and I definitely have 5.0 and now 5.01. You are worrying me now! Should mine be like that? My iphone and iPad are exactly the same. No iTunes match at all! I think we need to ask others for verification. I am unique!
