Apple has been awarded yet another patent, this time one that deals with a so called “microslot antenna†type of technology which could end up being embedded in future iPhones, iPads or even Macs.
These antennas will be apparently invisible to the naked eye and would also embed wireless radio antennas directly attached to the case materials. Such a setup will allow a lot of space to be saved-up under the hood of the device. The antennas would be inserted by using microscopic slots of just a few microns. The patent also details a bunch of solutions to where the antennas might be placed on a laptop. For the iPad or iPhone, the process would probably be very similar.
At the moment, current devices sport antennas to provide GMS, 3G/LTE, GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth facilities. The latest version of the iPhone comes packed with two antennas which cover five functions, overall. However, once the internal space taken up by the antenna clears out, future devices could become thinner and more slender.
The technology could also allow Apple to fulfill its long time dream of designing an all-aluminum case. At the moment, the tech giant had to make a compromise, adding a small area made of plastic/glass in order to allow radio windows needed by the internal antennas.
The patent was filed back in 2007, yet the technology might require an advanced level of fine-tuning before it could be ready to go on shelves for the general public.
