Apple usually discloses its iPad and iPhone launch weekend sales performance over the first few days, but this time the company has decided to stay mum. The most sane reason behind Apple’s decision might be the fact that the Retina Display iPad Mini hasn’t yet been commercially launched for users.
When it comes to its smartphones, though, Apple did announce sales of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c the following Monday after launch - 9 million iPhones sold over the first weekend being the new established record. Apple is probably waiting the launch weekend for the iPad Mini 2 so it could announce even more impressive sales number. And we know that Cupertino doesn’t discloses separate sales numbers.
Even without official figures, there is clear indication that the iPad Air is much more popular than the iPad 4 was at launch. According to an earlier story that we covered, the iPad Air has five times higher adoption rate than iPad 4. Even more, AT&T also disclosed some information, saying that the iPad activation rate has increased by 200% over the past year.
According to Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster, Apple could sell between 2.5 million and 3.5 million iPad Air units over the first weekend. This means it could outperform the 3 million sales number the company reached over the same period in 2012. But let’s not forget that last year’s numbers included cumulated sales and pre-orders for the fourth-generation iPad and the original iPad mini.
So, if Munsters’ estimates turn out to be true, it means that Apple sold this year more iPad Air units than combined iPad 4 and first-generation iPad Mini tablets. We can’t help but wonder what the final sales number after the iPad Mini 2 gets launched for users will look like.
