AppleInsider reports today on a news story on DigiTimes that says that Apple’s suppliers are on course to ship between six and seven million high-res LCD panels for the forthcoming iPad 3 in the first quarter of this year, prior to its rumoured March launch. DigiTimes’ sources say that Sharp and LG Display have the contract to supply the displays, which will be 9.7-inch QXGA panels. The sources also believe that the display will be twice the resolution of the current iPad 2. T hose in the know in the Taiwan-based supply chain have told DigiTimes that panel shipments for the new iPad will already have exceeded those used by the iPad 2 by the second quarter of this year, with one million of the new panels apparently already having been shipped to Apple in the fourth quarter of 2011. 10 million panels are expected to be shipped in the third quarter of 2012.
