Hot on the heels of Verizon Wireless announcing an expansion to its LTE network, AT&T today announced that it is expanding its 4G LTE network into three new areas, namely Lafayette, Indiana; Canton, Ohio; and Akron, Ohio. In its press release announcing the expansion, AT&T lists several benefits of its 4G LTE technology, such as faster speeds, enabling the customer to stream, download, upload and game faster than ever before; a faster response time, with lower latency, or the processing time it takes to move data through a network, such as the length of time it takes for a webpage to start downloading; and more efficient use of spectrum, meaning that LTE uses the finite resource of wireless spectrum more efficiently than other technologies, thus creating more space to carry data traffic and services and to deliver a better network.

“We continue to see demand for mobile Internet skyrocket, and our 4G LTE networks in Lafayette, Akron, and Canton respond to what customers want from their mobile experience — more, faster, on the best devices,†said Brian Ducharme, vice president and general manager, AT&T Indiana and Michigan.

AT&T already boasts the largest 4G network in America, covering more than 250 million people. AT&T has two 4G networks that work together, namely LTE and HSPA+ with enhanced backhaul, which ensures that unlike with other carriers, when you move out of its LTE coverage area you don’t automatically drop to the much slower 3G network.
