I have posted lots of photos comments etc about our week in Lisbon in March 2013.

However, I felt I should post one or two photos here as, IMHO, Lisbon is an unknown gem. The city is historic and has been the base from which many famous travellers and explorers have set off into the world.

Lisbon s public transport system is fun to use. The city also boasts some great buildings.

Hi Richard - taking Leelai's & your advice tonight, i.e. looking at the 'Travel Forum' - loved your thread on the Panama Canal - been to Mexico (including Acapulco) & the Caribbean at least a half dozen times each but never via the canal! Great pics & comments.

But I've been scanning in a LOT of old slides (many from our trips in earlier years) & family pics - back in 1974, Susan & I did a week in Portugal & Madeira - stayed initially in Lisbon and took a number of day trips to the coastal resorts; then flew to Madeira which was absolutely beautiful - did our first gambling there @ the casino, learn about the different wines made on the island, and ate some great food - had my first fried calamari not knowing what it was - :D

Just a couple of my scanned pics from Madeira below - Dave

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your comments. :)

I do like the look of Madeira. We haven't been there yet. I'm looking forward to seeing more of the island.

Hi Dave, so you were a taker of great pics even then!:) With these two lovely shots, they come up nice and sharp on my iPad. May I ask what scanning equipment/method you used to resurrect those great memories?

Hi Andrew - well, I was actually much more serious (and better back then - a couple of SLR camera bodies, a half dozen lenses, filters, flashes, tripods, and a BIG bag to carry what I wanted - kind of faded w/ the digital technology). BUT, the scanner was the same Canon that I described to you in a recent PM - first previewed the scanned slides (can do 4 at a time w/ the transparency adapter) - cropped in that mode, then scanned w/ the option of removing scratches/dirt (takes longer), and finally did some sharpening & auto color adjustments (nothing really fancy - just a few software options). I was amazed at how well the slides held up over the decades (the photos to a lesser extent).

As I recall, Madeira was a beautiful place to visit - an island (part of Portugal) about 500 miles off the coast of Morocco - and just glorious w/ colors from all sorts of 'flowering things' - back then I loved to used my 'close-up' lens and was an inveterate flower taker - SO, I did save a couple of scanned slides of flowers from the island - Dave :)
