when i enter my email address elltell@, it fills in correctly and then a box appears showing "el ltell" with a space this then changes the address making it impossible to get through. anybody know how to stop this?

Have you added yourself into the contacts app? If you put you email address as well, it should stop it correcting it.
If you are confident of your spelling, you could also disbale autocorrect
