I am thinking about getting an ipad 2 for my university classes. I am wanting to use it for pulling up my professors word docs and powerpoints on my ipad. I would like to write/highlight on these documents with a stylus pen and be able to type on the documents. I would like it to also organize the documents into different folders for the different subjects I am taking. Before I buy an Ipad, I would like to know if there is any app that will do this. PLEASE let me know if there is one. If you are using it, how do you like it? . Thanks

You would need a MacBook or iMac to do that. The iPad is an IOS device. Of course you can take notes and look in the App store at Pages (Word Processing) and Keynote (power point). I have the iWork suite on my iMac and use it a lot. Then you can sync. :) Visit your Apple store and talk with one of the specialist about what you would like to do. They are very helpful.

It is possible to load and view Power Points on the iPad, but I don't know of any app that will annotate them. I could be wrong about that. Note taking apps are one of the fastest changing categories.

On the other hand if you were to save them off as PDF files first, there are several program that can annotate PDF files, and several of those can save files in a folder hierarchy. But, those folders are specific to the app that creates them and can only be accesses by that app.

GoodReader will do this, though there are other apps that are better geared for student note taking. Do a search of the forum for note taking apps for a better idea of what is available.

Many of the note taking and PDF annotation apps will also access DropBox, which greatly simplifies moving files on and off the computer while also supplying a way to keep them organized in folders.

This is a common subject for students on the forum, which is another good search term you might want to try. No telling what useful info it might turn up for you. :D

iAnnotate will annotate pdf files and allow you to create folders within that app. You could use quickoffice to conver your word documents and i believe also presentations into PDFs. As you can see this is alot of extra work on the side. Whether it is worth it is up to you. I dont annotate school notes becuase i dont go to classes in the first place and i like to have evything in paper. On the other hand for me iPAD became a seachable Library with my books loaded on it.

I would't consider anything but pdf files on the iPad. Handling of Word, PP etc files is pretty hit & miss. That would mean converting them from doc or ppt to pdf on a PC/Mac then uploading them to the iPad. Would suggest Dropbox to upload and GoodReader to file, read and annotate. Whether you think it's worth it's another matter. Might be better to go for an 11" Air instead which has a lot more flexibility than the iPad and a proper keyboard for note taking.

Sounds like what you really want is a Tablet PC. Does the MacBook work with a stylus pen?

you won't be able to write with a stylus on a MacBook, not unless they have introduced touchscreen without me knowing, if they have, I'm off to buy one :)

but you could always record what the lecturer is saying and just sleep through the class ;) maybe even record him/her with a webcam

Not that using a stylus with a MacBook does add any usability, but if you really wanted to, you could use one to press keys on the keyboard.

I love this Forum - a great sense of humour and stunning technical advice. Who could want more?

(Better moderators - yes, we know.....:D )
