Camera Connection Kit - Won't Fit

To protect my iPad2 investment I equipped it with an Apple Smart Cover and a Speck SmartShell back cover. Now I want to connect my Sony camera and transfer some pictures so I plunk down the pricey cost of a genuine Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit and discover that because the connectors are too big/fat/wide and they won't fully insert into the dock connector port with the SmartShell installed. Surely I'm not the first user to run into this issue. I did a search but didn't find anything that might resolve my problem. Is there a 3rd party solution for connecting a usb DSC or SD card to an ipad2 with the SmartShell in place? TIA for any help you can provide.

Thanks for your quick reply. What I'm trying to find is the same kind of device (made by someone other than Apple) with a connector that will physically fit into the dock connector port. The Apotop appears to be out of my budget. The standard charging cable that Apple supplies with a new iPad2 works just fine with the SmartShell, so I wondering why their camera adapters are so much larger. Maybe I should just enlist my Dremel Tool and create my own custom Apple version.

That is generally my approach.

I forget which shell I have, but my camera kit fits fine without the need of a dremel tool.

Well the Speck SmartShell will not work with the camera adapters but yet works just fine with the Apple supplied charger cable. Maybe those people should have a face to face with the camera adapter people, fat chance. I'll work out something using my dremel.

The newer iPads with lightning connection would not have that issue. The CCK is replaced by to separate cable options lightning to SD card or lightning to USB camera. The lightning end is the same as the charging cables.

Hi Bob - I assume that you don't use the CCK that often? But other than replacing the SmartShell, just removing the shell temporarily to use the connection adapter would be my recommendation - YES, irritating but I'm in the same situation - I've had an iPad 2 for 2 1/2 yrs - had to replace my back protective cover last fall, so I bought a 'combo' back & smart protective cover - the charging adapter just fits but my CCK does not - now I just use it on trips about once a month, so not an issue for me to remove the cover - NOW, if I wanted to do this several times a week, then would soon become an irritation - good luck & let us know your solution(s). Dave :)

ADDENDUM: Well, I have a basement workshop & several Dremel tools (and MANY others!) - just took yet another look @ the opening over the charger/docking site of my iPad 2 - I'll probably go ahead and 'enlarge' the opening - will not detract from its protective purpose but should allow these 'larger' connectors to attach more easily - not sure about the material of the SmartShell but might be a consideration?

Problem solved. Dremel 7300 Cordless Hand Tool with a 240 grit sanding disc. 2 minutes of sanding on both sides of the USB conversion connector, then you just plug it in! DSC00248.JPG Thanks for everyone's help.

Nice one Bob. It's amazing how much a bit of ingenuity can achieve. :)
