In a recent BBC interview, Elon Musk (CEO of Tesla & several other companies) had this to say about the Apple Car, "Well, it's pretty hard to hide something if you hire over a thousand engineers to do it. This is an open secret."
When questioned about whether Tesla would be threatened by an electric car from Apple, Musk quipped that he believes Apple will develop a "compelling" electric car, because "it seems like the obvious thing to do."
Musk elaborated that instead of being threatened by Apple, he thinks "It will expand the industry." He finalized the thought by stating that, "Tesla will still aspire to make the most compelling electric vehicles, and that would be our goal, while at the same time helping other companies to make electric cars as well."
The final vision that Musk shared in the interview is a future in which all automobiles will be electric and self-driving. He believes that driving yourself will eventually become a hobby instead of a necessity.
Here's a final quote from the BBC interview which shows just how close this potential future actually is,
What do you folks think? Will some future version of Forza Motorsport or Gran Turismo include a 2019 Apple Car Vs. Tesla P150D?"[With] the current version of Summon, the car will come and find you if you're on private property," Mr Musk said.
"The car will exit the garage, close the garage behind it and come over to you.
"This is the first baby step - ultimately you'll be able to summon the car from New York if you're living in LA, and it will drive across the country, charge itself at the various locations and come to you."
This may sound like a vision of the distant future, but Mr Musk says it could be feasible in "a couple of years."
