Find my Ipad

I just bought my Ipad yesterday and love it. One question though. When I was setting it up, I did the find my Ipad on mobile me. I logged into my mobile me account and it showed where my Ipad was with wifi on. Does the Ipad have to be on to locate? I tried with it off and it didnt update.

Yes, turned on

Otherwise it's really hard to transmit where it is located.

It has to be in at least standby, or whatever it's called, as opposed to fully powered down.
