What's new

Food anyone?

A crisp, cold pear sounds very refreshing.

I don't know why I can never find a crisp one. I always think I'm going to like a pear, and then am disappointed. I must buy the wrong pears. I've tried a variety. I like Asian pears (sometimes called pear apples) though, which are almost always crisp. They tend to be more expensive in the U.S., though, and aren't sold as widely.

Believe it or not these pears were bought at Sam's Warehouse--they have very good produce there. I think it is called a Bartlett pear if I am not mistaken...or is that the red or brown one. Anyways....it's not too big and they are crunchy.

I also like the Asian pears and we get that often from the International Market next to our house...but they are expensive..like a buck a pear expensive!

can't believe it,was all ready for the chinese only to find its closed down....agh!!! ended up with fish and chips :(

Thanks, Skimonkey. I've not had luck with Bartletts. Maybe I just have unrealistic expectations of what a crisp pear would be, because I grew up eating mostly Asian pears.

I usually get my Asian pears at Asian markets, but I go rarely. My husband does most of the marketing, because he cooks. When I go to the market, I usually am looking for treats that I can put directly into my mouth, lol.

Have you got CostPlus World Market near you? I go there for candy, wine and beer, sometimes tea, because they have a decent variety of international choices. They have a bunch of British candies and chocolates, and cookies, for instance, at reasonable prices.

Costplus--sigh-we had one very close to our house until they closed it down. I 'm still bummed about that because i use to love going into their food and candy section as well. Since the store closed -- they haven't been able to fill it with anything else--so its just an empty old building now.

My parents have 3 pear trees in their backyard. Every august we pull them. Talk about a sweet and crunchy pear. You just have to find a neighbor who has a few trees to take from and than you would be all set!

I just googled "crispy duck" and see what looks like a roasted duck. Is that what's called crispy duck in the UK? I've had Chinese food in the UK a few times, but I don't remember the menus. I think I just asked the waiters what was good in Chinese. (I'm Chinese, lol.)

Yes, it's really just the outside that is crispy. They shred it and you roll it in pancakes with cucumber, spring onion and hoisin sauce (if I've spelt that correctly?).

Oh that's sad about CostPlus. I would hate to lose them, because I get a lot of treats there. I could get the wine elsewhere, but the treats I'd have to order online instead, and that's a slow way to satisfy a craving. Depending on which city I'm in, I'm not always near CostPlus, but I try to stop by during trips to cities with CostPlus and load up.

I'm jealous of your parents' pear trees. I bet the fresh ones taste much better than the store-bought.

I think those Asian pears are what we call Nashi here....they are very crisp, a cross between an apple and a pear.
We have Corella pears if you want a crisp pear.
