What's new

Food anyone?

Oh my Dave! What a wonderful Birthday your wife is having! Happy Birthday to her!

Those desserts look delicious and have now awoken my sweet tooth, as I try to think of what we have in the cupboards. ;)

Have a wonderful time, the 2 of you celebrating this special day!

Hi Leelai - I MUST do a follow-up from my previous post - first, another pic of a Monk fish to show HOW much tail is present to ENJOY! This meat has been described as a 'poor man's' lobster - the texture is usually a little chewy w/ a wonderful flavor - the dish that I had (i.e. smoked) was more tender than I had eaten previously; SO, for those who may be at a restaurant where this fish is offered, then give it a try if my explanations are interesting.

Also below is another pic of that 'dessert sampler' from the other direction! The Apple tart w/ the ice cream on top was my second favorite; however, the Nutty Irishman is seen to better advantage - this is one of the BEST desserts that I ever had (and that is saying a LOT) - just brings back so many childhood memories of eating favorite snacks - a frozen dessert w/ chocolate, creamy stuff, chocolate sauce (dark & bitter), and nuts/toffee on top - WOW! Dave :)

Since my husband is on a hunt trip, I decided to treat myself and make some blueberry pancakes.

I'd show you a picture, but they seemed to have disappeared! Hehe... ;)

OK - no one is eating in nearly a week! :)

Well returned from our local Costco store w/ a LOT of food, wine & beer (the latter all local micro brews) - tonight we dined on Dungeness crab (already cooked so just steamed up and let them cool) plus a salad - I like cocktail sauce w/ added horseradish/lemon & wife w/ melted butter/lemon - below a pic of the crabs after steaming & cooling before ingestion! Wine for the night a chardonnay from CA (Sonoma-Cutrer Sonoma Costal) - mostly all shell - the legs are basically what is edible but the meat is delicate & delicious! Dave

Well, I'm embarrassed - no one interested in crabs! :)

Tonight, Susan roasted another recent Costco purchase, i.e. Rack of Lamb from Australia- used a simple recipe (which I prefer w/ good meat) - cooked to medium rare - just served w/ green beans - my wine was a La Crema Pinot Noir from California (a fav!) - I cut off the main meat and gave my wife the bones w/ meat/fat left on (she just loves chewing on these bones!) - don't have an early pic, but attached is her plate after we consumed 8 of these rib cuts - BTW, for our Australian friends, these were delicious! Dave

BTW - those knives are made in France, Laguiole - not cheap but will last your life time!

Ah contraire kind sir, I for one love crab in every form I've had the pleasure of eating. I even like it better than lobster. :)

Well I don't mind crab but much prefer a rack of lamb......it's actually one of my favs. I will do small cuts in the meat and insert pieces of garlic, then a thin layer of hot english mustard and sprinkle with rosemary. It's so delicious! A shame it's so expensive now to what it once was.

Like your wife, I just love chewing on the bones, they just have to be the most tasty of all bones!

We had French lamb cutlets for our barbecue yesterday also! ;)

And on another matter entirely, Costco is coming here. They've opened stores down south last year but we are getting one here in Brisbane, although it's too far away from where we live for us to shop there, but it's a start. Totally new way of shopping for us, so it will be interesting to see how it goes.

@Dave... Crabs! Love the critters. Your wife's got the right idea; melted butter, bit of lemon and a nice crisp white. Got to stop thinking about that now!;)

Lamb, a real favourite in our household. Nothing like a sunday roast be it a leg or a rack of lamb with a nice Shiraz or a CabSav from one of our world-renowned South Australian vinyards. But more of that in the winter time (except summer barbies of course;))
If you come across a good wine from the SA Barossa wine region HERE grab it with both hands;). Could be expensive; a lot of it is exported to Europe and the USA keeping the prices up here doggone it!

Luckily dave doesn't like to gnaw on the bones (to save his teeth), but I do, thus more lamb for me and bare bones on the plate. The recipe for mustard/garlic/breadcrumb coating was Emeril's.

The lamb recipe sounds delicious! When I grill lamb or veal chops, I love to add herbs - rosemary is a great choice or a blend, such as Herbs de Provence - suspect that by March weather will be warm enough for me to get back on the grill! Dave :)

Costco is an experience - we just go 3-4 times a year, but may frequent the place more; the wines that I buy locally are often $3-4 USAD cheaper per bottle, e.g. that La Crema Pinot Noir was $18 @ Costco, but is usually $22 at our local Harris-Teeter. AND you can indeed buy in BULK! Nothing like bringing home 100 or 200 rolls toilet paper! :D

Yep, Susan gets all of my bones (i.e. of the animals that I eat - ;)) - had some expensive bridge work to several of my front upper teeth and can't really gnaw or pull - she loves munching on bones and going after marrow if available in a good size shank bone!

Hi Andrew - my wine cellar is down to only about 10 cases now - use to have over 700 bottles (i.e. 20+ years ago) w/ a nice sub-collection of Australian wines, mostly Shiraz or Cabernet blends - but that has dwindled also to just a case and a half now - did open a 6 yr Shingleback Shiraz a few weeks ago - delicious and improved w/ about 3 yrs of sitting in the basement cellar. With lamb, however, I usually opt for a Pinot Noir. Dave :)
