Food anyone?

That BBQ experience just looks deeelish Dave. Just something I've experienced myself, fairly often, is that taste, quality and popularity of an eatery can be inversely proportional to its appearance. Or put another way, some of my most disappointing experiences have been in the more pretentious "posh" establishments. I wonder if you agree.
That Little Richard's place is certainly one I would love to experience. I think North Carolina is edging very fast towards my travel "bucket list":)
Andrew

Hi Andrew - well, I think that I've shown enough in the travel threads to entice some members, especially those living in the eastern half of the USA to pay North Carolina a visit - believe I need to post a little more about the Carolina coastal spots to visit - beauty, food, & history, including Blackbeard the pirate and his ship the Queen Anne Revenge, which sank in Beaufort, NC and is being explored currently by undersea researchers.

BUT, the restaurant indeed is unpretentious (we rarely go in, just do take-out) - started in 1991 by a guy named Richard Barrier, hence the name - he actually gained his experience in Lexington; looking @ the pic of his place, smoke is rising from the pit chimneys - he slowly (about 10 hrs or so) roasts the meat over hardwood coals and much of the fat in the pork shoulders drips onto wood w/ a sizzle that enhances the smoking. A number of BBQ places supplement or have switched completely to gas or electric cookers, so Barrier stills offers the traditional & historic way of preparing the pork. Dave

Yesterday, Susan bought some of her seasonal goodies - one of our favorites are Moravian Ginger Spice Cookies (see pic, top one right) - the North Carolina Piedmont area was settled by Moravians (from PA down the old wagon road) in the 1750s; Salem (now 'Old Salem') became the 'major' town of the area in the 1760s - baking is a specialty, including Moravian cookies of different types; the ginger spice cookies are the ones we like the best, and should be very thin, crisp, and heavily spiced - you CANNOT eat just one - first the cookie is small and it is better to think that 'you can just eat a dozen'!

The Salem Baking Co. makes some of the best and are the ones we usually buy - check the link; online ordering is available, so if you live in the USA then shipping will not be a big issue - HIGHLY recommended. Dave

BOY - no responses in the last few days - well, about 3-4 times a year, Susan & I have a 'snack' dinner and virtually always on Christmas & New Year's Eve unless otherwise preoccupied.

This Christmas Eve - our snack dinner shown below: 1) Cheeses (Havarti w/ dill & sharp Wisconsin Cheddar) w/ wafer crackers; 2) Smoked Trout & Salmon (on toasted thin or pumpernickel bread w/ a homemade dill sauce or light cream cheese); 3) Caviar (American paddlefish); and 4) Salads - of course, along w/ a bottle of the bubbly (tonight - Chandon Blanc de Noir) - we'll probably do a repeat on New Year's Eve - Dave

I forgot how much I like caviar! Pheasant (aka "turkey for two") today.

Yep - I can smell that pheasant roasting @ the moment - a perfect choice for two - the breast & thigh/leg meat tastes pretty much like turkey - a holiday choice for us. Dave

They make turkey strips that look like bacon. You could have had turkey bacon and pancakes for Christmas dinner.
