What's new

Food anyone?

Well, embarrassing to come back to this 'essential' thread, i.e. we all have to eat, and to see that I had the last post a week or so ago! YIKES! :)

Well, tonight I was the 'indoor' cook so need something simple (better outdoor @ the grill) - SO, we picked up a couple of Dungeness Crabs @ Costco yesterday - steamed them for about 10 minutes (they are pre-cooked) & made some simple salads; also, our last night to light the Menorah (we're a couple of days behind having gone out to eat a few times) - wine for the night, a Sauvignon Blanc from Washington State (Horse Heaven Vyds) - Susan likes melted butter & for me cocktail sauce w/ horseradish - pic below @ the start of the meal - delicious! Dave :)

Ooh. They look really scary. I'm not sure I could eat crab like that. Too realistic for me but I do like crab and languistines etc... I'm waiting for my oven so will be posting more when I get it this afternoon. I had my normal porridge oats and a hot cup of cappuccino. Might get myself a lovely cup of hot Yorkshire tea?

LOL! :D Well, you just pull off the legs & claws and use lobster crackers & small two-prong forks - they were tasty! Dave :)

Well tonight, my wife made her 'famous' Jewish Matzo Ball Chicken Soup - auctions this recipe off each year @ our Unitarian Fellowship - very basic but delicious - had a bowl & another half w/ some white wine, i.e. a Chardonnay from Washington State - quite tasty! Dave :)

I've never heard of that dish Dave but it does look delicious!

Will we have to bid at that auction to get the recipe? ;)

Hi Leelai - matzah explained in the quote below from HERE - we have 'matzah crackers' around the house all of the time - great w/ cheese or a little butter; the soup is pretty basic, i.e. a whole boiled chicken cut into parts plus veggies & chicken broth - NOW, the hardest part is making the 'homemade' matzo balls - if not done properly, they can expand to melon size or be little hard cue balls - SO, experience (and trial & error seem to be the trick according to my wife) is important; BUT, if done well the balls are tender, fluffy, and flavorful soaking in the soup.

I'm not sure after decades that she even has a recipe - kind of in her head now after years of making this soup - matzo balls can be 'bought' but will just not be the same vs. the ones made freshly from matzah meal - I'll send her a link to this thread to see if she even has a recipe - but if you give it a try, may take a few attempts (or more) to get those matzo balls just right - Dave :)

Matzo, Matza or matzah (Hebrew: מַצָּה*; plural matzot; matzos,Matzus of Ashkenazi Hebrew dialect); is an unleavened bread traditionally eaten by Jews during the week-long Passover holiday, when eating chametz—bread and other food made with leavened grain is forbidden according to Jewish religious law.

All very interesting Dave!

I understand about not having a recipe....my mother in law doesn't have recipes either, so I have to watch as she makes something and take some notes. She also doesn't measure anything, she just knows how much to put in by instinct. ;)

Thought I'd show you what I got home to after a long day at school. 7pm!!!!

Also a cup of hot cappuccino.
Waiting for a beef roast and roasted veg.

Hi Carol - I love meat pies & yours looks delicious!

Our community was started back in the 1750s by a Moravian religious group from PA - in the next decade the town of Salem was found (united in 1913 to form our hyphenated city of Winston-Salem) - BUT, Chicken Pie is a centuries old specialty - a recipe HERE from our NC state magazine - there are so many variations - Dave :)

I must say ski (wistfully looking at watch, still two hours to go before dinner) that looks delicious! Not that a Thanksgiving turkey falls into any class of "leftovers", but that's a great way of enjoying it. Am I wrong to think that would make a great lunch having a slice of that pie cold with a nice glass of beer?

Here's the matzo ball recipe. I add some parsley (fresh or dried) and leave the batter sitting at least an hour. Manischewitz - Manischewitz Matzo Balls

For the soup, I place a cut-up chicken in water to cover, adding salt and pepper and a bay leaf, bring to a boil then turn heat to simmer for one hour. Skim off protein scum. Remove chicken to cool, leaving the broth in the pot. When chicken is cool, break it up into chunks.
Meanwhile, on medium heat, in chicken's broth, cook 2 stalks of celery, one quartered onion and 2 carrots (more of each, if you want.) Some people also add parsnips. Cook for one hour. Add shredded chicken and previously cooked matzo balls. Shortly before serving add sprigs of fresh parsley and dill (if you add them too soon they lose flavor).
