What's new

Food anyone?

Well, I've not posted here in a while - we ate well on our Northern AL/Nashville trip (see my travelogue, if interested) - catfish is popular in northern Alabama; in Nashville (just 2 nights), we ate at Morton's Steakhouse but had shellfish appetizers for dinner, i.e. oysters on the half shell, ahi tuna tower, lump crabmeat, & lobster cocktail; second night, we dined at the Capitol Grille in our hotel (The Hermitage - couple pics below of the lobby & restaurant); we shared a dozen oysters yet again and I had a delicious trout dish w/ a few glasses of a Sancerre wine that was quite good!

Last night grilled some Australian lamb chops (believe I've shown a pic before in another thread and may have left the recipe) - TONIGHT, we visited our local Japanese restaurant (Mizu) - I had my usual sashimi (picks this time were tuna, yellowtail, & octups) w/ a few rolls (shrimp tempura & king crab). Now, Susan had a bunch of appetizers, including the BBQ squid (ika) shown below (we always share this delicious dish) - her other choices were shrimp tempura, shumai shrimp dumplings, and a tomato/avocado salad - some pics other of her dishes. Dave :)

Well, I guess no one is eating lately - ;)

Tonight, Susan roasted a whole duck - the easiest way for two is to just take some large poultry shears and cut the bird in half (do the same for pheasant) - these wilder birds are just not easy to cut apart, so each to his own!

Below, a pic of my plate w/ half a duck - the meat is dark & favorable - for me the main issue is getting the skin off which has a LOT of fat (don't like but wife loves to munch on it!) - this is a delicious treat that we both enjoyed; NOW, I have to figure out a recipe to grill a duck w/ some smoke on my grill - will report back later! Dave :)

Very nice pics Giradman,.....the Hermitage looks like a very special hotel....just love those rooms you've shown, how beautiful they are!

Love the food pics as well and would love to try all of them......although I'm not one for sashimi, I've really tried quite a few and no just can't take to them I'm afraid.

Your duck does look delicious,....I had some on sushi on the weekend. I also find it very fatty and don't care for that either but when it's cooked just right, it is very delicious, minus the fat of course! ;)

Hi Leelai - the Hermitage Hotel is rated 5* (and 5 diamond); believe the only one in Tennessee (although the Peabody in Memphis should be also); the company that runs the hotel has some other great properties, i.e. Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, Virginia (the Sunday brunch is outstanding) & the Kiawah Resort/Sanctuary Hotel (where we just vacationed a month ago). For those traveling in this area and have some spare change, then any are highly recommended!

I started to eat sushi/sashimi in the late '70s on a trip to San Francisco - introduced Susan quickly and after a few tries, we were hooked! There are many options w/ some cooked (e.g. eel, crab, etc.) That duck was a treat that we've not had at home in a while (occasionally order 'duck breast' in restaurants - a lot easier to eat that a bony whole one!) - but will check my grill books and see what I can do outside w/ some smoke? Dave :)

We just love 5* hotels although we've found that it doesn't always denote a beautiful hotel but just the services they offer which I guess is how those stars are earned. We haven't seen the 5 diamond rating very often though....maybe that's a US rating system. I just may have to look into that.

We only began eating sushi early last year....I've tried it in the past and just didn't like it but then our eldest daughter started making it at home and we liked hers. Our girls then talked us into going to some sushi restaurants and now we're hooked. ;). Having travelled to Japan late last year, we did have a traditional Japanese dinner at a Ryokan (I plan on doing my next instalment of my travelogue which will showcase that meal and a traditional breakfast) it was mostly all raw seafood of some type.....a bit too much for me I'm afraid, I just couldn't get my head around the 'raw fish' to enjoy it totally. Maybe we should have eased ourselves into the concept more slowly! ;)

I look forward to seeing what you do come up with those duck recipes......

Of course you may not get to eat duck at the Peabody, just watch them ;)

LOL! :D Well, you obviously know the reason, but others may be in darkness - ;)

I've stayed @ the Peabody Hotel in Memphis twice - there is a late afternoon tradition of a duck parade through the lobby into the central pond (pic below) - all fill the lobby & the mezzanine balconies to watch this event (info HERE)- NOW, I've eaten at their 'fancy' restaurant twice but cannot remember if duck is on the menu - ;)

Also, in their Gift Shop are some wonderful 'Duck Mementos' - I picked up some boxer shorts - on the back is a picture of a duck and the statement 'BUTT QUACK' - love it (as does Susan) - Dave :)

They look just wonderful leelai. I imagine they would go wonderfully with a nice cup of coffee. Pictures on this thread just make me get up to go to the fridge;)

I think they'd go wonderfully with anything really or nothing at all! Deeelish!! ;)

I know what you mean by this thread.....it's a great appetiser teaser! ;)

I made these buttermilk Cheddar biscuits to go with dinner tonight. ☮♥

They look very nice! I've never had one and would love to know what they taste like.

I've noticed that what you (US) call biscuits is different to what we (Aussie) call biscuits. Quite a few things are different actually.

When we were in the US, we would order a sandwich and then get a roll and not 2 pieces of bread like we thought we would.

It's all very interesting and surprising at times! ;)
