Hello iPad world - info needed re iMessage

Hello .... I'm a new kid on the block so to speak. I love my iPad and can't put it down.... However can someone tell me how I can utilise the iMessage function... My son has an iPhone 4 but every time I try to send a message I'm told he is not registered for iMessage ... Any gems of knowledge out there please...?

Make sure that your son's phone has the most current update 5.01. (I am not familiar with all the versions of iphone, since I have a droid). Also, when you send your son an imessage-it must be in email form. He should confirm which email he has assigned to receive messages from this app by going to his settings. Imessages can only be sent to people within the apple network and that has the most current update. Hope this helps and good luck!!
