Most of the time, my iPad stuck in headphone mode, but when I run certain apps, it stuck in speaker mode(means even if I plug in the headphone, the sound is out from the speaker), and my microphone is not working...besides that, when it's in headphone mode, I can only hear the sound from one of the earphones...it was totally fine before I upgraded to ios5.1...

Welcome to the forum....Try a reset/reboot, hold the power/sleep button and the home button down at the same time and continue holding until the Apple logo appears. Let go and your iPad should restart although it may take longer than usual. See if that solves your problem.

Try using other earphone maybe the problem exists with the earphones

This is probably not the problem, but have you made sure the headphone jack is properly pushed in?

This could be a really bad idea as I am new to iPad, but here Gors anyway. What happens if you mute the speaker and have the headset on? Nothing? Sorry, it doesn't sound logical but I am curious and don't have a headset to test it out before I show my ineptitude!

Thanks, I will try that! I think I am still under the year so maybe I will get Apple to fix it. Other bizarre things are happening as well. VERY WEIRD! Didyou read about what happened to my contacts ...crazy! And yesterday I sent an email and even tho my header was right the photos are upside down when it arrived at my friends computer!!

If the reset advice that Roy gave does not help, try to go to your settings - general - acessibility - hearing and switch the slider closer to the left side to see if our left ear phone will have sound. Maybe this might help your headphone issue.

Are you in the right thread...this looks like a different topic being discussed?

Thanks I am going to do that! I don't have ear buds ! That was in response to someone else's problem. My problem is the sound comes and goes I. The speaker. I am going to see if I have that setting too low! Thank you so much

Thanks skimonkey,
I didn't even realise that existed. However I have moved it to the left. I do not have or use earphones for my iPad. Is that setting only for headphones or the iPad speaker internally? Thanks again!

Squib-I do believe that it's when you have earphones on. On my iPad I only have one speaker and just played around with left/right slide. Nothing changed without wearing the earphones.

I hope your speaker problem sorts itself out, otherwise maybe going to the Apple store might help. Good luck! :)
