I Tunes Gift Card

Okay, Back again! Hope everyone does not get sick of my questions
I have a I tunes gift card. I would like to use it to purchase some apps (games). I logged in to I tunes on my iPad; when I attempted to make a purchase it only gave me the option to use credit cards. No option to use I Tunes gift card. What did I do wrong?
Is it better to make the purchase through my iPad or do I have to use my PC? If I have to use the PC how does the app transfer from my PC to my iPad. I would really rather just use my iPad and not use the PC to make the purchse...seems like it would be more convienent.
