Both of my iPads (first and second gen) are AT&T 3G. I find it indispensable.
Up here, during heavy snowstorms, the power goes out for 2-5 days at a time. But, with a 115 Amp-hour deep-cycle marine battery portable power pack, 3G and a 3G tower across the canyon, I have all the internet, entertainment and communications (email, texting and phone calls) I need for days on end.
Also, I like to go to the lake or out on road trips to beautiful places and just relax, get inspired and pick up my iPad to write poetry or a short story, maybe do a little artwork. No 3G needed for that, but...AT&T gets signals in places my Sprint phone doesn't and there are times when I need to look up/find something, shoot an email or simply check in on my home via my web cams.
My suggestion is, if you can afford it, GET IT. At least you have the OPTION of using it instead of wishing you at least had it available to you. Especially since buying 3G is on an on-demand monthly basis, no contract and easy to do, reasonably affordable. Plus the GPS in the 3G units comes in handy, too. Get the "You Need A Map" app-it's a BIG download (2GB) but...it's maps of the U.S. that are on your iPad, not on the servers, which can be used when you have NO WiFi or 3G connection. The GPS works great with it. And it's free for the rest of this month! The maps themselves are pretty decent, though the street name markers can be a little confusing if you're looking at a dense area (the street names are read left-to-right, not in the direction of the street). Or any other similar maps-on-the-iPad app.
The 3G iPad is not only my toy it's perhaps one of the most useful tools I own.
