interesting wifi issue

I have my deceased mothers old 2011 iPad2. The battery has been flat for over 12 months. I re charged it, and when powering it on, I get the white welcome screen, saying swipe to get started. I do that, then it asks me to log into a wifi.
I choose our wifi and enter password, but it comes up with 'cannot log into wifi'. Yes, I am using the correct password etc.. I powered it down and back up, same issue.
I cannot understand why it does not log into our wifi.
Since I cannot even get to the start page, I can't check setup etc..
Any ideas or advise would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

hi Erhard,
check your router settings - having had the same problem with an old ipad i had to switch back the WPA modus from WPA2/WPA-3 to WPA/WPA-2 for authentication. then it worked.
