The Guardian has some news today that I know a lot of people have been waiting to hear: the BBC’s director general, Mark Thompson, has confirmed that it will definitely be launching an international version of its popular iPlayer iPad app sometime this year, with a monthly subscription fee of under $10. The good news came during Thompson’s speech at the FT Digital Media & Broadcasting conference in London this Wednesday, where he said that the BBC likes the iPlayer because it enables it to “sell directly to the consumers", without the shows being rebranded or reformatted, which sometimes happens when BBC shows are bought by international broadcasters. The app is already available in the UK for free, where it has already been a roaring success.

“The greatest month-on-month growth now is not on PCs or cable TVs but on iPads, iPhones, other smartphones and games consoles,†Thompson told The Guardian.
