iOS v4.2 Update Begins to Roll Out

My update went very well. Took 3 hours overall. That was backing up the old version, downloading 4.2.1 and then backing up again. Everything is there, I had 11 apps that needed to update. All of my music is still there. I checked my mail and it sure felt like it was downloading mail much faster. Now I have to try to make a folder.

update failed on mine twice now. They really need to get this excessively slow back issue fixed, it is really pathetic that this issue still exists. Not to get into it here, but since I bought this thing, I have tried mutiple machines, formatted machines, different cables etc, it's just random as to whether my iPad takes 5 mins to backup or literally 5-8 hours.

I'm now restoring it since it crashed half way through update, then I'll update again.

everytime i try to update my ipad i get a connection error!

damn !

i guess i'll download the firmware elsewhere. (GOOGLE!)

so after 7 hours of waiting for it to backup, it crashing on me 3 times, and having to hard reset more then once. I am still without a working iPad. She'll boot to 75% and freeze

So, I'll let it restore overnight now

I have to say, that while I love the little thing, I find it to be the most frustrating device I have ever owned to to simple things like backing up and updating. I can't say I'm impressed with it from that aspect, then again in 30+years of PC experience, I have never impressed with Apple for more reasons I can't get into here.

I honestly dont think I will upgrade at this point. Reasons being, I prefer using categories for folder, I prefer Backgrounder for multitasking rather than 4.2's native multitasking, I have no need to print anything directly from my iPad, I have no use for Game Center, I only use one email account, so no need for a unified inbox...there is just nothing that is ringing my bell so to speak.

The screen on Apple - iOS 4.2 Software Update says:
"Updating is easy.

Connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your Mac or PC and follow the onscreen instructions in iTunes."

Well, just remember to be signed in!

I thought I would go mad thinking why I couldn't upgrade. It isn't so obvious that when iTunes is syncing with your devices that you may not actually be signed in.

My iPad backed up and did all the syncing and even downloaded the new version of iTunes, but iOS 4.2 was nowhere to be seen.

I rebooted and re-synced and still nothing. Only then did I notice that I wasn't signed in.

All's well that ends well. Well, we'll see. I'm still downloading iOS 4.2.

Download in Norway

Hi,
Just downloaded and installed 4.2.
Most features seem to be in place, however so far I missing the following:

There is no Folder app avail
Not possible to do multitasking

Anyone else had the same problem?

From setting I have 4.2.1 installed and not simply the 4.2.
I live in Norway where iPad is not yet commercilly avail thru AppStore...

Advice please

Egil

well, after two attempts to backup, both took hours to complete, Then it crashing during update process. I left it to restore overnight, and when I got up this morning I finally have ios 4.2

But, I lost everything. Well, not exactly. I lost ALL of my apps. They aren't showing up in itunes anymore. I still have all of my video's, pics, mp3s, wireless settings, even wallpapers etc, but none of my apps are on the ipad or my PC anymore. I have to redownload everything all over again.

Not impressed.

Got mine too ... 4.2.1. Mutiltasking works and the new mutil-account email inbox is nice. Too bad my printer won't work with Airprint - only 10 HP printers are supported.
What is the Multitasking? Is there suppose to be a folder or something? I did my update this morning seems to work. Just a little confused about the Multitaking people are referring to. Hope this isn't a dumb question.

My update was uneventful.. Everything went smoothly, but it did take over 1/2 an hour to complete.

One new feature I REALLY like is that you can now search for text in web pages displayed in Safari.
