iPad 2 Users In The UK

Very sunny here. Not sun bathing temps....not a sun worshipper anyway, but pleasant. Enjoying the morning trying to paint with my daughter on her new birthday easel...now if could learn o paint in the next 20 mins I could be her hero.

When I go to my sister in laws in Bayford near Wincanton, it's even worse there! My iPhone struggles everywhere. None of the networks survive there and I can't get her to get broadband, they don't see the point no matter what I say, so I have withdrawal symptoms when I go there. When you say GPRS or EDGE, do you mean that big E sign instead of wifi lines. Is the GPRS sign like a blue dot on the left of the screen. Sorry for lack of knowledge but I'm still fairly new to all this technology.

I have tried many networks in Kent (O2, Orange, vodafone and now 3). I truly have found 3 best for network coverage with regards to data. Phone is with O2, ok coverage but could be better.

Oh, so I am not alone. I went with O2 because I thought they were the best but it's like all things, you learn through experience. I might have to get this mifi as Gab suggested this as well.

It's difficult to say - you can buy a 3G repeater, but they're usually expensive and restricted to commercial applications. Most mobile phone companies these days share masts in rural areas - it's just too expensive to install your own infrastructure for the limited population. Looking at the coverage maps is usually the best way to see what chance you stand of getting good reception but maybe you have friends or colleagues or even neighbours who have a different network provider to you? Another issue is whether any coverage would be 3G or 2G. The older network operators, such as Vodafone, have upgraded their urban networks to 3G but left their rural networks as 2G, because the economics were simply not there. Only '3', as far as I'm aware, has an all-3G network in the UK, because 3G uses different frequencies to 2G and '3' wasn't around when the 2G licences were awarded. As a result, when they rolled out their network, they were forced to go 3G all the way. So, if you can receive '3' you know you'll be getting a 3G connection whereas for Vodafone, say, you'll probably only be getting 2G - which will give your GPRS or EDGE - much lower datarates and not really suitable for web browsing.

If you already have a WiFi only iPad a better option is probably going for a SIM-free MiFi unit. I have the '3' Huawei E585, which is available SIM-free widely. You could then try it with a series of low-cost PAYG SIM cards and see which works the best. I find this MiFi gets really good reception - more signal bars than my iPad and both are on '3'.

Yes - the big 'E' is EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution) and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is the blue dot.

If you really want to get technical you can read about EDGE here

Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

and GPRS here....

General Packet Radio Service - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

but they basically use the standard GSM cellular radio infrastructure that is used by a normal mobile phone to provide data services. The origins of GSM go back to 1982 when work on the original GSM standard started so, in technological terms, that's prehistoric. So GPRS and, then, later EDGE 'tinkered' with the GSM standard to squeeze some additional capacity out of the existing network infrastructure. The advantage to the operators was that their existing equipment could be used with minimal modification. But there was only so much that could be done with this old technology, so along came 3G.

3G uses much more modern signal processing technology to get very much higher data rates but requires a completely new set of equipment and antennas. There's nothing in common between the equipment used for 2G and 3G. 3G itself has evolved too and now there's HSDPA more colloquially known as 3.5G, which the iPad supports. And on the horizon we have 4G........

OK - lecture mode off - sorry, it's what I teach so I'm an evangelist......

Me too, my iPhone is on O2, my company phone is on orange......O2 is way better than orange however, now the networks are starting to do deals to use each others infrastructure this should change.......and not before time!

O2's network coverage is really bad in Glasgow though. I had to cancel a contract with them, because the Blackberry kept disconnecting, mind you, I live fairly central. Whereas Orange has always full bars in the same location. Easy provider choice for me ;)

Yes, orange and t-mobile share a network now. Only made use of it once, but it is very convenient.

Yes, that would be great because Heathers phone is Orange and she reckons it is better than O2. She can get reception in Bayford as well. Irritating when I have the better phone.

Tim, thank you, you are very informative, so that's why I was struggling, it kept on losing signal, and then going onto either Edge or the other one ( yes, I've forgotten, don't go there). It couldn't decide what to do. I was trying to download the Wedding Service to iBooks and it just failed on my iPhone. I landed up getting it when I was home.

Awww! I remember when my girls were that age. Oh, sorry was that your picture, cool. Hee hee. If that was your child's effort, brilliant but if yours, you do need tuition.

That is my effort. I am teaching her brush technique....I think I may need a tutor for her....not really, hopefully this whim will only last a few weeks....my poor carpet, thank god my wife is abroad.

Ha ha ha. Yes, these whims don't last, especially when the pony is eating grass in the field and getting fat because Heather fell off and didn't want to ride anymore. The only reason I've kept him because he keeps my horse company. My youngest girl, Alex, loves painting still, she has also joined a jewellery club at school which amazed me because she is a bit of a loner.

Is that because her mother is always on the iPad......just sayin!
