Hi, first time on this forum, looking for some practical advice please.

I bought a 64gb wifi only model six monthe ago. Couldn't see any reason at the time to buy a 3g version. Didn't realise at the time that the gps function was only available on the 3g model.
I now want to use the ipad for a specific app (navionics marine charts) but it is no good without gps. What are my options please?

I have just bought a new iphone 4, is that of any use maybe linking to the ipad through bluetooth or camera lead to provide a gps?

Or do i just buy a 3g ipad? ( more money!)

Thank you Alan

Alan, I saw a thread yesterday where someone from Singapore worked out a way to connect a GPS to his iPad in the car (a bit hard for me now to look it up as I'm on iPF.) Maybe you're looking for something like setup?

Are you sure mate? My iPad 32gb wifi has gps

I think you may have confused the functionality of what your device has. A Wifi-only iPad does not have genuine GPS, for the reason that the chipset which gives iPad its GPS functionality is on the 3G model.

Well I get the same arrow symbol in the corner that my iPhone has and it located my exacts position on maps.

Yes but I would guess from his/her question that he/she wants to take it portable where there is no WiFi service. GPS sitting in the living room has its limits.

I know mate. The iPad works with the sat nav I have on it from my iPhone so it must kind of work unless it's just cuz of the wifi

I have a 64GB WiFi and I just use my cell as a WiFi hotspot....it works with maps to show where I am traveling in the car. I don't know if it would be accurate enough for your needs though. Another way would be to buy a bluetooth GPS and link the two through bluetooth.

Jailbreak you iPad, install the full bluetooth stack, and then buy a good Bluetooth GPS receiver.

You read it correctly, iPad and Tapatalk muhahaha! :D

Anyone use the "bad elf" device on their iPad yet?

I just got the Ipad 2 and put Marine&Lakes USA HD from Navionics on the ipad. I did get the 3g version and it seems to work good and the Navionics app is impressive for my lake. If you have the wi fi version only ipad then get the Bad Elf or the GNS 5870 MFI Bluetooth. Gns 5870 replied that their device worked with all the apps for ipad pertaining to gps. I will also get the gns 5870 with my 3g version at some point. I like how portable it is and both the bad elf and the gns is suppose to be powerful gps for ipad and will work good with your wi-fi ipad. The gps that came with the ipad seems to work good and goes thru my house and shows me where i am.
