iPad 64GB WiFi problems (cannot connect)

Hi, I have been reading through these threads as I have similar problem "cannot connect to internet" although nice strong wifi signal...

I think this is definitely a router problem because; I got an iPhone 4 earlier this year it connects fine to my home router and most other public places, but my works router is about 5 years old and my phone will not connect to it. It sees the wifi and strong signal showing but go to safari and you get the cant connect msg.

I recently got an iPad and guess what? yes it connects everywhere fine just the same as the phone, I bring it to work and same old problem exactly as the phone.

Which leads me to believe that if the router is not relatively new for some reason it struggles to connect. I dont think it is a hardware fault within the phone or iPad seems too coincidental...

This is just my thoughts tho...

Maybe a router/access point guru can come up with something :)

I have the same problem. I got my iPad in October, and as long as it was on OS3.x, it worked JUST FINE. I upgraded to the new OS 4.2.1, and since then, I have intermittent connectivity issues. It connects to my home network, and works for a while; after a few minutes, it stops working. I called Apple Support, and they had me reboot my wireless router, which seemed to fix it, but within an hour or so, it was back to the same problem. I've looked at the Apple support discussion forums, and it looks like a problem only with this OS. I've also checked my Wireless router to ensure it is setup as per Apple's recommendations (WPA vs WEP, etc), and thats all fine. But the problem persists. Anyone have any idea if Apple intends to FIX this problem with a new OS update??

Same here: strong wifi signal on my macBook, iPhone, and iPad, but it's the iPad that loses connection every 15 minutes or so. It started with the update to 4.2. Several solutions seem to work. First is to turn wireless off, the back on. The quickest way for me is to renew the lease in the wifi settings screen. It appears to create a new ip address every time but it gives me access to the Internet and email for a while. Good luck.

Had same problem myself. Solution was to insert a proper DNS address in the config file - not using the router's address. A good test to see if you have a DNS problem is to put a suitable IP address in safari's address bar - not a URL. eg put 66dot249dot89dot99 instead of googledotcodotnz (or your equivalent at your location).[ Being a noob I'm not allowed to insert links] Make sure your router has a valid DNS address also.

Modem/iPads

What you say makes sense, however, my modem is only 2 months old, so it probably is not the reason for it not connecting to the internet.
I just spent 1 1/2 hrs. on the phone and website on my IP's chat line.
They tell me they don't work with Apple products, they are only trained for PCs so that says a lot to me, however, they gave me access to all the information I might need and gave me Apple's phone number and said they will troubleshoot it and they probably will ask for the info. they gave me.
At first I had the internet, but I couldn't get my email connected, now neither does. Tomorrow I will call Apple and let you know what they say.

I called Apple today and the fellow told me to delete my email settings for my home email. Then he told me to hold the sleep button and the home button in together until the Apple logo came up. Then you wait till it resets itself. It was amazing, my internet set itself, I set up my email again with no problems. He never mentioned the modem
Here is the # for Apple 1-800-263-3394, you'll need your serial No.
Good Luck

It's APPLE, Not YOU

I registered just to tell you that despite all the home remedies posted here, it's APPLE that's at fault.
I gave in to the peer pressure and purchased a 64GB Wi-Fi enabled iPad directly from Apple 24 hours ago.
Expecting full plug and play capability from the Apple Wizards who couldn't wait to push me out the door after I had made my purchase (so much for "Free Setup"), I wasted 3 hours last night and almost my whole day off today trying every possible solution to the inability to connect to the internet and found only one: RETURN IT.

I went through all the simple tech support suggestions online like: simultaneously hold the home and power buttons; renew lease; reset internet connection settings; ignore connection (?); unplug router - wait 1 minute - plug it back in.
After midnight, I called Apple Tech Support only to find out they were closed. I did file an Express Lane request last night and called the west coast early this morning.
After being on the phone for about 30 minutes, the guy finally had me completely reset the OS and download it again while connected to iTunes.
That took about 3 hours total (I have nearly 3000 songs during sync) and brought back flashbacks of Windows people telling me, "Oh, that didn't work. Guess it's time to reformat the hard drive!!!".
I called back in the afternoon after more frustration and got a 2nd tech support person, this time a girl. She went through 1 or 2 scenarios with me again and suggested that I needed to download new firmware from Linksys.
I had already tried that and it didn't seem to work very easily. Online Chat led to "you're out of warranty but we can help if you pay us". Not.
When I insisted that I was not going to be pawned off after spending $858.00 not 24 hours prior, the girl transferred me to a "Senior Tech Support Specialist."
He read the history, asked a few questions, and quickly determined that if my iPod continued to connect to the internet on the exact same network and the iPad would not, it was a hardware issue.
I motored back to the mall ASAP before they closed and just returned the whole thing.
Don't get me wrong: I LOVE my iPod Touch and at the risk of ruining my eyesight, I decided to purchase the iPad. In theory, I love it.
But after reading this one thread on one of I'm sure dozens of different websites devoted to all things Apple, I'm secure that it was never me or my hardware that was the issue.
I hate to say this is somehow synonymous to the well documented connectivity issues the iPhone just had recently with dropped calls galore, but it makes me rethink my desire to have one or to purchase one anytime soon.
I think I'll do a little bit of research and see what floats to the top after all the new introductions at the CES in Las Vegas last week.
A tablet -maybe even a later production model and more reliable iPad is definitely in my future, but it seems the current edition has some glitches and I was not willing to waste any more of my time or chase a "Fix-It" solution for something brand new and so expensive.
Oh, I will say this: the sales experience in the store was great; the tech support was garbage until I got the senior tech today, who confirmed everything I was thinking was wrong; the return experience at the store was pleasant and hassle-free.
I love my iPod and in no way am an Apple hater.

I have exactly the same problem as the OP and it's pretty frustrating.

The ipad tells me the wifi is connected and it shows a strong signal symbol in the top corner, but there is no internet access. Safari, itunes, the app store, and any other app that requires internet says it can't connect and when looking at the network settings the IP address begins with 169. Everything was working fine up until a few days ago. I've reset it, reset network setting and all settings, renewed the release, rebooted the router, swapped routers, altered the brightness levels, turned off autofill (was never on) and I'm about to reformat the whole thing since nothing else has worked.

It is NOT a problem with the router. I have two routers in my house and the ipad no longer works with either of them, while someone else's ipad continues to work with them fine, as does every other device. I don't find apple's suggestion to buy THEIR router very helpful either. If their ipad won't work connect with anything other than an apple router, this is a huge fault with their product.

Did anyone else ever find a solution to this?

It is probably just a bad ipad, just like anything electronic there is always a few that crap out or dont work right out of the box, I have had no issues at all using mine on any router including using my iphone as a hotspot with it. I would say they need to replace it if still under warranty.

"Cannot Open Page: Safari cannot open the page because it is not connected to the Internet"
I get the exact same symptoms. I do get a valid DHCP address from my wireless router, (Netgear WAG102) AND a laptop connected wirelessly can get to the internet.
Other interesting points:
1) I can get to web pages by ip adresses but just not host name - Biker, how about you?
2) At the Apple store, I got in on their wireless access points no problem and could get to the internet. I've tried other open access points in the city, but still no luck.
3) I can ping IP addresses, but not trace route them.

Any new thoughts on how to fix?

Not sure which of these did the trick, but I did both before testing. SAFARI was set to off for both options, but I cleared data anyway.
Also my DHCP address is in the 169 range, so the post on staying clear of that range was not correct in my case.
Thanks all.
I fixed mine by just doing Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. Soon as I did that I was able to connect to the internet.
Go to Settings
Select Safari
Look at the AutoFill option.
Click on Autofill
Turn off Names & Passwords (It will automatically clear what's in there)

Close Settings

ReOpen Settings
Select Network
Select your network
And it will work fine!

FIXED - Again

Mine stopped working again, and this time I only used a modification to Benty's suggestion. I just clicked on the Reset Network Settings and it worked fine again.
The issue seems to be that IPAD does not know it's Internet IP address. Not sure why it needs that over the Default Gateway to which it should send all traffic to and let the gateway figure out what to do next. Apple Network experts, any clarifiations?

There is no fix right now. It's obvious Apple knows there is an issue and they also know people aren't going to go out a buy an Apple router just to resolve the problem. I have 3 wireless Windows based laptops that all connect fine to my wireless network. The last thing I want is to have issues with my laptops after putting in an Apple router.

I hope this issue can be resolved with a software update because if they can't fix it, I will be a very unhappy 1st time Apple purchaser. How Apple missed the boat on the wireless aspect of the hardware is staggering.

I dont use an apple router so i dont understand why that would make a difference, I have connected to my iphone fine and also belkin, linksys, netgear routers all worked fine.

Some have suggested using an apple router would make things better. I was simply saying that all other devices connect to my Linksys router, so the router is obviously not the issue. The way I see it, is the iPad is my newest hardware in the house, and it should at least connect as well to my WPA A2 network as everything else. After all the iPad is all about mobility right? I really don't understand how the Apple engineers test their hardware / software, but for so many people to be having connectivity issues with their routers makes me think there was not enough qualification testing. It will be interesting to see if the next software update fixes this issue. If it doesn't then I suspect it is a hardware flaw. I'm sure the iPad 2 will not have these issues.

I stay connected for hours, it's just when I first turn it on, or wake from sleep mode is when it is a pain is the ass.
