iPad charge faster if turned off?

Easy, guys. Let's not trash this thread - it's a good topic. I'm new here but I've seen posts from both of you around the forum, and I respect your knowledge and the way you help people by sharing what you know.

The topic of batteries happens to be one I know something about. I don't know the exact specs of these, but I do understand the principles involved. We're only talking about a difference of maybe 20%, so it's hardly worth starting a fight about it.

You're right...

We still have loads to learn about the iPad and iOS4 is on the way soon. That promises to be fun!:)

This stuff isn't rocket science, it is easy to observe.

When you turn the iPad totally off and you plug it, it turns itself on to the green slider page and goes to sleep, not totally off.
No one is disputing this! What I am saying is that AFTER you plug your iPad into the charger (or a USB port on your PC), you can turn it off... completely. Just hold down the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider comes on then you can turn off your iPad. What is so hard about this to understand???

Try this... Start iTunes and plug in your iPad and you will see it between the Store and Playlists where it normally is when it is turned on. Now hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider comes on and turn off your iPad. Lo and behold, your iPad will disappear! This means it is turned off! And you can further confirm this by unplugging the docking cable and you will NOT hear the bee boop sound that you would normally hear if your iPad was turned on and you unplugged it.

Sheesh!

You are mistaking the sync cancel action for the iPad being off. All you are doing is killing the connection to iTunes.

The reason the iPad is always on when charging is that the little computer in the iPad is running a program that regulates the charging process.

If you could truly defeat it and turn of the iPad when it is connected to the charger you would have a brick.

Try this plug in any iPad to the charger THEN try and turn it off. You can not do it for but for a few seconds before the little system says hey I have been mated with the sync plug therefore I must come to life and do my charging thing as needed.

You will see the little Apple logo briefly then it will go into a screen sleep while it charges. If you have any radios set to be alive they will awaken and consume current in the background.

This stuff isn't rocket science, it is easy to observe.

I KNOW HOW TO READ!!!!
English is my native language and I have been speaking it for over 50 years!!! I know the difference between slide to cancel and slide to power off!!!!! There is absolutey ZERO confusion between these two things.... ZERO!!!

This is absolutely 100% completely false!!!!! When I plug my iPad into my charger or the USB port on my computer and hold down the Sleep/Wake button, the slide to power off slider appears on the screen after a few seconds and I am able to slide it over thereby powering off my iPad. I know it is off because if it were merely asleep, I would be able to "wake it up" by pressing the Home button and nothing happens when I do that. The ONLY way to wake up my iPad at this point is to press the Sleep/Wake button at which point the Apple logo will appear for a few seconds followed by the lock screen.

I have further confirmed this by going into my router and my iPad is instantly dropped from the list of wireless clients when I power it off, whether it is connected to the USB port or the charger, thereby confirming that none of the "radio" options are functional because there is no longer a connection to my network or the Internet!

I think maybe you are the one who is confused because if you power off your iPad and then plug it into the charger or the USB port, "the little system" as you call it (whatever that is!) will recognize this connection and turn the iPad back on just as if you had held down the Sleep/Wake button. After that happens, you can leave it connected to the docking cable and power off your iPad and it will continue to charge... really... honest... I swear!

And they are not "discussing" anything! I do respect iVan's input and there is no hatred or animosity between us... as far as I am concerned, but this other guy is simply passing along bad information.

I mean c'mon... confusing slide to cancel and slide to power off???

As far as having fun... I enjoy this immensely! I took forensics in high school and college. I love a good argument and know how to support my case with facts. Well at least one of us does! My wife thinks I missed my calling to be either a lawyer or become ordained!

First and last post on this discussion:
1. I read it all with interest and then decided to experiment a little. I plugged in my running iPad to the charger [not my computer]. It started charging.
2. I unplugged and turned the iPad completely off using the Red Slider switch.
3. I turned on the charger using the switch on the power strip I had it plugged into. It turned on.
4. I waited about a minute and then held the Sleep button down until I got the Red Arrow. Slid it to the right and sure enough, the iPad turned off completely.
5. I went to bed. When I rose 8 hrs later the iPad responded to the bottom front button and showed 100% charge. It was on. Maybe the 'charging fairy' came by during the night.....?
Anyhow, most of this doesn't matter as someone stated earlier.
Happy Holiday

OK for the life of me I don't understand why so much confusion for such a simple subject.

But a few points:

Yes the iPad can be turned "off" when plugged into a power source.

Why you would want to do that is another story. For one thing, any minor disruption in power will cause the iPad to simply wake back up.

But more importantly, while the iPad will charge when off, if it is like the iPhone it will not really charge faster when off. iPhones have always charged more slowly when completely off, and I believe that is due to the charging circuitry when off only designed to get it charged enough to turn the device on. And sure enough if your iPad/iPhone's battery is low enough, that is exactly what happens: it charges when off just long enough to bring it back to life.

While I have not done any tests with my iPad, I have with my iPhones: they charged faster when left on, yet asleep.

I suspect the iPad is the same, based on how long it takes to be able to turn on when lower than 5% charge.

But in either case, I really see no need to turn the device completely off to charge. Heck, I wouldn't even bother shutting down the radios, unless you are heading out and REALLY need the fastest possible charge.

Michael

I just needed my ipad in a hurry and I had almost drained it. Someone in the same room told me to turn it off, it probably charges faster.

Hence, the reason for this thread.

Lord.
