Ipad mini not recognized by itunes

Trying to sync ripped music to the new mini, have 10.6.8 and iTunes 11.0. Whenever I hook up the mini iPhoto opens and seems to think there is a camera connected, I close it and the mini shows in the side bar but is grey, I can't click it or acces anything in iTunes, it is frozen, but if I disconnect the mini iTunes works again. The iPod still works fine but I just updated it and have not tried since the update. Tried everything I found online with no luck, any help out there
