I'd go with the iPad, hands down. But I'd check with the school first. Some institutions frown upon it.

Nice. How do you share documents with it?I would get the iPad for sure if you plan on bringing your desktop to school with you. For me, it's working great. I'm able to write lecture notes, record lectures, access and write assignments, etc without the weight of lugging a notebook around. Also the battery life on the iPad is a huge plus. No need to carry a huge power brick around as well.
I agree with most of the comments on here.
If you are going to use it to enter data, write reports and the like, then you need a Macbook. But if you are going to do most of your work on the desktop in your dorm room, and only use it to take notes and look up information, then the iPad would be fine.
When I was in college, (laptops didn't exist, heck desktops didn't exist at the time) I found myself doing homework in all types of different places - it was the only way to balance a social life with schoolwork. In todays world I am sure that means you need a laptop.
Here is another idea. Get the Mac by following the link below. Apple gives you an ipod touch with the purchase. Sell the Ipod Touch and use the money towards an Ipad. You will end up with a Mac laptop, Windows desktop, and an Ipad. All bases are covered.
