iPad Smart Covers

I ordered my iPad 2 awhile back and it's coming soon. I also ordered a smart cover and it arrived about three days after I placed the order.

The smart cover is a rather ingenious piece of technology. I was looking at some of the reviews for the cover and they show the iPad turning off (or falling asleep) when the cover is on and when they take the cover off the iPad turns back on (or wakes up).

You might be able to guess what my question is. When the cover is on the iPad does it turn the machine off or put it to sleep? When it's taken off, does turn the machine on or wake it up? I am of course talking about "sleep mode" versus being "awake".

Also, when you're not using the machine, is it better for it to be in "sleep mode" or actually turned off?

When the Smart Cover is on the iPad2 it merely puts it to sleep and doesn't turn it off. In sleep mode there are some background tasks that keep running in the iPad - for example the iPad checks for email at pre-determined intervals that you have established, so there is some battery drain.

Apple recommend that you switch the iPad completely off - by holding down the Power switch for a couple of seconds rather than either just pressing it briefly or putting the Smart Cover on - about once a week. I've had my iPad1 for about 4 months now and rarely turn it off completely. One of the great things about the iPad is the instant-on, instant-off behaviour - no waiting around like you do with a Windows machine - even when Windows is put to sleep.

I haven't charged mine since Thursday night, used it quite a bit on Friday but not much sat and today until now and I still have 40% left. It's been asleep under the smart cover the whole time and I never cut mine off. Jus open the cover swipe to unlock at your at your home screen, no reboot or anything like that
