iPad won't be recognized in itunes?

I just bought an iPad and it won't show up in my itunes so i can't register it or use it. I have a brand new imac with 10.1 itunes. I have no idea why it wont work. I also tried connecting it to my old macbook and it also won't show up on that itunes. Please help

I would try another Sync Cable. If that doesn't work, you got a defective Ipad. Return it for a new one.

iPad not seen by iTunes

Snow leopard w/recent iTunes on a Mac book running parallels. Parallels sees the iPad just fine, and photo wizard will even pull down my pics. But I can't seem to make the Mac side find the iPad. Even when I turn parallels off. Any thoughts?
