That's odd. You can purchase a warranty on there website. There is also a good discount ($136 vs. $170 for 3 years) if you pre-order so I don't know why they told you that.

I bought the 3 year warranty from Apple on my 24" iMac. The screen failed and Mac had a local store here replace it.

Buying Square Trade Warranty ahead of Ipad

I called ST after i purchased the warranty and they told me to call when i got the ipad and they would adjust the purchase date for the warranty. Also you can fax them a copy of the invoice so it's all there for you incase you need to make use of the warranty. Really, Really love Square Trade!

BTW.... You can also cancel a warranty and they will refund you the pro-rated difference.

I just went to the site and checked it out, looks pretty good. No battery though...
