MacRumors has a report today asking if the iPad 2 might actually be equipped with Apple’s new Light Peak high-speed connection. MacRumors notes that the newly revealed technology might explain some of the different rumours that have been floating around about the iPad 2 in recent months. For example, it could explain the strange port on some of those iPad 2 case photos that appeared a while back. Lots of pundits have tried to guess what the unusually shaped port might be for, but maybe it was for a Light Peak connection all along, it’s just that no one knew about it at the time the pictures emerged.

According to MacRumors, Light Peak prototypes have been using hybrid USB 3 connectors that look very similar to USB connectors, and possibly could be the exact shape to fit the mystery hole in the various iPad 2 case prototypes. That would be a lot more likely than Apple putting a regular USB port in there, which many people were sceptical about. So, there is a possibility, although only a rumour at this point, that the iPad 2 could have both a regular dock connector and a Light Peak connector port. Interesting!
