This story on WordPress founding developer (and one of PC World’s Top 50 People on the Web) Matt Mullenweg’s blog with the arresting headline “Israeli Security Hates the iPad†indicates that the iPad is still getting a hard time in Israel! Remember before the iPad was out in Europe, Israel banned any American iPads from being imported into the country? In his blog post Mullenweg details how the airport security bods at Ben Gurion airport detained him for about an hour asking questions (and no, they didn’t want to know how to install WordPress plugins or anything like that!), and turning on and taking apart all of the 20-plus electronic devices in his luggage, taking particular note of his iPad.
“They took it out of the Apple case, turned it on, scanned it, took it away for 10 minutes to scan somewhere else, asked if anyone else in Israel had used it, when I last used it, asked when I got it, and ultimately said that their ‘technology team’ had not cleared it for carry-on and they would need to pack it in a special box, wrap it, tape it, and check it directly with Continental.â€
Mullenweg was also told that he couldn’t touch his iPad or the box other than to put some WordPress stickers on it. He concludes by saying that he had no problems getting his Sony PC through though, on the other hand!
And we thought it would be easier getting the iPad through airport security than a laptop!
