AppleInsider reports today that Apple is about to announce a new “cutting-edge” research and development center in Japan.

The news comes via the Japanese prime minister, Abe Shinzo, during a campaign speech near Tokyo. Shinzo said that the new R&D facility will be similar to other Apple facilities in Asia, and will be “formally announced soon.”

So far Apple has not made any official statement on the prime minister’s comments, but it certainly appears to be expanding its R&D presence at the moment. Just a few weeks ago news leaked that Apple was planning to build a new R&D facility in Cambridge in the UK, along with a new Shanghai facility, and two new centres in Israel.

AppleInsider notes that in a recent 10-K filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Apple said “The Company continues to believe that focused investments in R&D are critical to its future growth and competition in the marketplace and are directly related to timely development of new and enhanced products that are central to the Company’s core business strategy.”
