Engadget has a really cool video today from LAAN Labs, which shows them using a Microsoft Kinect device, an iPad, and the String Augmented Reality SDK to turn 3D data into an augmented reality image that can be played on the iPad. As it shows in the video, the team used Libfreenect from Open Kinect to record the data from the Kinect. LAAN Labs explained on their blog how they created a textured mesh from the calibrated depth+rgb data for every frame and played it back in real time. A depth cutoff enabled them to isolate the person that was filmed for the video from the walls and any other objects. They then used the String SDK to project the video back onto a printed image marker in the real world, and they also experimented with removing the image marker from the picture with camera data from the area around the marker. Check it out!

That is simply incredible!

Really really nice. I can see many many usages of this in the future. It is so exciting to watch the evolution of the world we live in going so fast. As a kid things could take years or decades to advance. Example: the one rotary dial phone at the center of our house, becoming many phones throughout the house, becoming button dialed, becoming cell phones that where bricks, becoming star trek communicators, becoming blue tooth where our cars are the blue tooth connections.

Simply amazing.

Is it viable to install a mini-kinect motion sensor on the longer side of ipad3?
Or
Is there an app that emulates true motion sensing with image detection software from ipad 2D camera like pointgrab?

When is this possible? I am waiting for this...

Ipad4? Basically, the motion sensor technology (kinect/pointgrab app+ipad) is more or less already available
maybe except the mini hologram projector...
what's stopping apple, production cost?
