Lock Screen Keypad Size

In iOS 7, the keypad size on the lock screen is much larger. Is there a way to decrease the size?

When I'm in public I feel like it would be easier for someone to see the pattern of my tapping even with my other hand covering it.

No. There isn't. But you have an option of turning simple passcode off. You then use a complex passcode, which is alphanumeric, just like our Apple account passwords.
