Lost all data while updating operating system.

While connected to my pc and updating my operating system.. I lost all data. I tried to restore from backup but it was asking for a restore password? I do not remember saving any password for this? I tried my iPad log password and a couple of possible ones. First any idea why I lost my data, second what do I do bout the password I do not have?
